Review: Saving Avery

Angela Snyder very kindly recently gave me an advanced copy of her new book 'Saving Avery' and in all honestly, it was such a brilliant read!

At the beginning of the story, we meet the book's protagonist Avery who appears to have the perfect life with her husband Nathan and looking in from the outside, women everywhere wish to be her. Nathan is a very desirable young man from a very wealthy and powerful family who likes to keep up appearances by using Avery as his 'trophy wife'. However, she is hiding a dark secret that she is in fact very unhappy with her life as her husband regularly abuses her both physically and mentally as we see frequently throughout the story. As a result of this, Avery even attempts to take her own life.

I find Avery a very likeable character who I really felt sorry for as she is a very fragile woman. As the story progresses, I felt myself scared along with her as to what Nathan may do next as his actions escalated each time he believed Avery had disobeyed him.  I found Nathan's character to have similar dominating qualities to Christian Grey but at least he can be seen as somewhat of a good person, whereas Nathan is just extremely corrupt and evil.

We are later introduced to Max Harrison who starts at the hospital Avery volunteers at. They are instantly drawn to each other but their relationship could never go anywhere due to Nathan's powerful and controlling grasp over Avery. It is mentioned that he once put a guy in a coma for simply winking at her proving that he is not a man to be messed with! Max truly seems to be the only one who understands Avery and vows to do anything he can to help her and she tragically won't accept it as she does not want him to get hurt. It's heartbreaking to see Avery get so close to living a happy life with Max (that she really deserves) only to take ten steps back to being trapped in her marriage when her family do not support her on multiple occasions.

This novel is not a light read as there is a very prominent theme of domestic violence so please be wary of that but it is an easy and captivating one. I loved how gritty the book was in places but there are still incredibly sweet moments that showed Avery's true self balancing it out. I only knew these characters for 232 pages but I was so immersed in Avery and Max's love story and Nathan really is a brilliantly terrifying villain that really made the book a page turner for me.

Saving Avery is released on the 21st of July and I highly recommend you pick it up if your looking for a quick read. The story builds up so much that I simply could not put it down until I had finished it! It is available on Amazon for £1.99 (here)
